Once again we met at the Futsal venue in Swindon, for the PSFL Futsal Cup competition. The end of season cup has been well supported over the years by all teams who compete in the League program, which runs from October through to March.
Nine teams entered the Cup and would all play each other in a round-robin event. So players had a chance to compete against teams they would not normally meet in the League.
The day proved to be of the highest standards, with players from the Second Division giving the teams from the First Division a few things to think about. However, some of the teams who compete at the higher level proved they had the ability to see off any potential slip ups to make it to the final stages.
The semi-finals would see the champions of Division One, Birmingham, play against London. Birmingham showed their class and defeated London with a 6-3 win. The Royal National College (RNC) would play against the Second Division winners, Lisburn, for the other place in the final. Lisburn could not sustain their unbeaten run for the whole season and lost 6-2 against a dominant RNC.
There was a third place play-off between London and Lisburn, which London won 5-1. This meant that the Irish team would not end the season on a high, but they could still celebrate a great season.
It was left to the two teams in the final to decide this year’s Cup winners. After a tactically tight first half, both teams were level with a goal apiece. Both teams started the second half with a determination to keep their goal well defended. Birmingham would prove to be too strong in the end, and after a second goal, they won 2-1.
The day’s events would culminate with a presentation evening at the County Ground, home of Swindon Town. Our hosts did us proud yet again, as this was the second year we would hold the end-of-year presentation at this venue.
All trophies for the whole season were awarded at the ceremony, including Fair Play Award and Player of the Year for Divisions One and Two. Harry Gibbons and Nail Dempsey took the honours for the First and Second Divisions respectively. London won the Cup in September, which kicked off the season. Lisburn won Division Two without losing a game all season. Birmingham won the League, and then went on to win the Futsal Cup. So with a League and Cup double for Division One, they proved to be top of the tree for the season.
