On Sunday 3rd April, 34 coaches from archery clubs in the North West attended a coach development day at Bamber Bridge, Lancashire organised by British Blind Sport funded by Agincourt 600 to increase the knowledge of coaches who are keen to work with people with a visual impairment (VI). The coaches received theory based training in the morning and practical training in the afternoon.
On completion of the day the coaches were asked to provide feedback of the event through an evaluation. Here is what some people had to say about the event:
Everyone involved in the event; volunteers, participants and coaches were asked to provide feedback of the event through an evaluation. Here is what some people had to say about the event:
“It was well organised and the staff and coaches were really good, very friendly and professional throughout. We can’t wait to complete our beginner’s course!” – Participants
Lauren Impey, Participation Delivery Officer at British Blind Sport, said “There were two distinctive aims of this project which was to upskill coaches at archery clubs across the North West and help them feel more prepared and confident to work with individuals with a visual impairment. Secondly, to encourage the upskilled coaches to attend the archery open day to meet with individuals living with a visual impairment to build a rapport and put into practice their newly acquired skills. The overall objective has always been to encourage people with sight loss to receive a positive sporting experience so that they can continue with confidence at their local archery club.
Furthermore, and because of the generous support of our funder Agincourt 600, British Blind Sport is delighted to be able to offer 35 x £40.00 bursaries to individuals with a visual impairment who want to complete a 6 week beginner course at any of the clubs listed here.
BBS would like to say a special thanks to Simon Cordingley of Chorley Bowmen, David Poyner of British Blind Sport Archery section and Terry Myles of Galloway’s Society for the Blind.
