Mandy gets ready for challenge of a lifetime for BBS

Ultra-fit BBS supporter Mandy Bansal is taking on one of the world’s toughest challenges. The Marathon des Sables is ranked by the Discovery Channel as the toughest footrace on earth – totalling the equivalent of 6 marathons in 6 days… in the Sahara Desert!

Mandy, from Ilford, Essex, aims to raise £1,500 and she explained, “My reasons for doing the Marathon Des Sables relate back to a life-changing incident that happened in 2009 after I experienced an episode of Optic Neuritis where I lost the vision in my right eye for over 6 weeks. This completely disabled me for that period of time and made me re-evaluate my lifestyle and goals and I vowed to change my life, take on crazy challenges and raise money for charity. Here I am about to take part in the biggest challenge of my life... the Marathon Des Sables, a gruelling multi-stage adventure through one of the world’s most inhospitable climates - the Sahara desert. It is a self-sufficient race which means I will need to carry, on my back, everything except water to complete 6 marathons in 6 days!  I am raising money for British Blind Support as my experience of losing my sight for 6 weeks made me realise how difficult blindness and visual impairment can make life. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to take part in sports as it can enhance your life and make you a happier and stronger individual, so to support the brilliant work British Blind Sport do is the perfect fit.”

Ian Carr, Fundraising Manager for British Blind Sport said, “To simply get to the start line and contemplate the Marathon Des Sables is incredible! What Mandy is attempting will undoubtedly put her fitness, mind and will to succeed to the test. By raising money for British Blind Sport she is helping visually impaired people achieve their goals and aspirations; we wish her lots of luck and she will have the support of all of us here at British Blind Sport as well as the whole visually impaired sporting community.”
