VI Sporting Taster Day in Birmingham Inspires Young People

On Tuesday 10th February 2015, visually impaired young people from across the west midlands came together to attend the British Blind Sport and Action for Blind People Sporting Taster Day. The enormously successful event provided participants the opportunity to experience visually impaired sport, which was delivered by expert coaches.

Birmingham City University’s Doug Ellis Sport Centre played host to the event with excellent facilities on offer to showcase four different visually impaired sports. Over the course of the day 22 participants, aged from 8 to 16, were able to take part in VI judo, football, tennis and goalball.

British Blind Sport’s Participation Delivery Officer, Ross Hayward, said, “It was great to see so many visually impaired young people enjoying sport. By creating this sporting opportunity we hope to have motivated the young people to become more active and access the local sporting sessions which are available to visually impaired young people.”

Action for Blind People worked in partnership with British Blind Sport to organise and deliver the event. Rachel Setchell, Action for Blind People Team Leader for Children, Young People & Family West Midlands Team, said, “Working in partnership is a great way to offer these kind of events. Using organisations who have the right experience to give these youngsters an opportunity they wouldn’t normally get. We look forward to running these on a regular basis with British Blind Sport. We also appreciate the support from the local VI services and schools who bring the participants along.”

The event was delivered with the support of many different organisations which ensured its successful outcome. These included, British Judo, Tennis Foundation, Goalball UK and RNC Academy. All of which provided excellent support and delivery throughout the day.
