Swimming is a sport in itself and once mastered it can lead to participation in other sports. It is a challenge to learn and satisfying once learnt. It can be enjoyed at a competitive level and just for fun with friends.
For visually impaired people it is certainly more of a challenge to learn; it is more time consuming, more reassurance is needed, more explanation as to the correct movement, more individual attention given to the swimmer, but once mastered it can give a great sense of freedom, well-being and confidence.

“I’ve been told swimming is a wimp sport
but I don’t see it:
we don’t get time outs,
in the middle of a race we can’t stop and catch our breath,
we can’t roll on our stomachs and lie there
and we can’t ask for a substitution!"
